In 2006, I walked into my dad's office with a sketch on the back of an envelope and a clear problem I couldn't stop thinking about. I'd been working for someone else, watching jobs get rushed, corners cut, and customers treated like invoice numbers. My dad listened—really listened—and then he did something I'll never forget. He handed me a check. Not a lecture. Not warnings about how risky it was. Just a check and a question: 'What are you going to do differently?'
That loan bought tools, materials for the first project, and exactly enough confidence to say yes when someone called. The first year was all small jobs from people my dad knew. Kitchen cabinet repairs. A fence that wasn't quite straight. Nothing glamorous. But I showed up early, stayed late, and didn't leave until the work was done the way I wanted my own home fixed. People noticed. They told other people. By year two, I had to hire help.
